Records of Sellia

Hello to everyone that is reading this message board! I have been hard at work in tracing my Selliesi roots, and have made quite a bit of progress. I was able to order some microfilm copies of Sellia Birth, Marriage, and Death records starting in 1809. It is amazing how easy tracing my family has been. You Italians have kept wonderful and accurate records for much longer than the U.S. I have been able to build a quite impressive family tree.
But what if I would like to trace my roots farther back than the early 1800s? Are there any old churches in Sellia that may keep records? Maybe just baptisms or marriages or deaths? If so, does anyone know how far back these records might go? I would guess that accessing these records (if they exist) is best done by visiting the church in person - and this is something that I would someday like to do. But I want to be as prepared as possible and have the proper expectations.

Admin da quello che ho capito, Hunter ha tracciato il suo albero genealogico fino al 1809 e vorrebbe farlo fino agli inizi del 1800.
Vorrebbe un giorno visitare la chiesa di Sellia per trovare i vari certificati di battesimo, di matrimonio e di morte se ovviamente questi ci sono tra i documenti.

vuole sapere se si possono rintracciare documenti prima del 1809, cosa che dubito si possa fare a Sellia. Mi sembra che gli archivi non si inoltrano nel 1700, se poi qualcuno pensa che si puo', si faccia sentire.

Keope, forse negli archivi della Chiesa? Cosa ne pensi?

Sicuramente negli archivi della Chiesa potrebbe esserci qualcosa ma non so fino a che anno arrivano le registrazioni dei certificati, bisognerebbe chiederlo a don Francesco.

Thanks for the help. I understand that in most of Italy the church was responsible for keeping records of baptisms, marriages and deaths long before the government started keeping them. From what I have read, it seems that most churches kept these records in Latin, and in some cities the church records are very good and can be traced back very far (1300s and beyond). But it is hard to tell whether every church kept their records, or if those records survived. I doubt if a small village like Sellia would have any, but do you think it is worth a try? What is the main church in Sellia? Is there more than one? Which is the oldest?

Ah! It looks like you answered me while I was typing my last post. Thanks for your help. Is there only one church in Sellia? Do you know how old it is, and if there are any photos of it online?

There are three churches in Sellia: The main one is San Nicola (the patron Saint) once known as Church of Immacolata, the Church of the Holy Rosary e The Church of Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snow) the newest church.
